This Project-Based Unit (PBU) was created as part of the Project Learn 21 Century at Salem State College during the 2005-2006 school year. The goal of this PBU is to help intermediate or post-intermediate Spanish students become more familiar with the countries in the Spanish speaking world, in general, and one of them in particular, as a way to get to know Hispanics, the peoples from these countries. This PBU (and others like it) is part of a Hispanics site at the main site of the Foreign Languages Department at Salem State College. The goal of this site--and the PBU's associated with it--is for students to get to know the Hispanics around them, starting with the Hispanics at the College, and proceeding to the Hispanics in the larger community, the US, and the Spanish-speaking world (the purpose of this PBU). Content and Grade LevelThis PBU can be completed with a student with an intermediate level of Spanish: approximately 3-4 semesters of college Spanish (3-4 years of high school Spanish). Curriculum StandardsStudents will learn the following outcomes:
Implementation OverviewThis project can be completed in three weeks. Week one: Students will explore the information about all Spanish-speaking countries. Each student should complete a journal with summaries of information that they find important and pertinent. Week two and three: Students will select one country to which they would like to travel to and become familiar with it so as to plan a trip to that country and prepare a class presentation on the planning of that trip. Resources Needed
EvaluationStudents will be evaluated on three products: Students will create and complete a travel journal during classtime. Students will complete a quality country poster during classtime. Students will participate in an oral group presentation for 20 minutes.ConclusionAfter completing this webquest your students will have a better understanding of Hispanic Culture. They will also have created travel journals and country posters, worked as part of a team, increased their technology skills, and given an oral presentation. The overall result will be the fun they will have as they explore another culture.Links
