SPN495: Temas de lingüística del español
(Topics in Spanish Linguistics)

This course looks beyond the general linguistics topics studied in SPN 410 and looks in greater detail at the topic of Spanish (dialect) variation in the Spanish-speaking world and the major sound (and other) changes that have taken place in history of Spanish. This course also looks at the sociolinguistics and the pragmatics of oral communication in Spanish. including issues of variational sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language change, and language contact, with special reference to Spanish in the United States and bilingualism in the US.
Prerequisites: Advanced Intermediate Spanish (SPN 202, etc.), and an Introduction to Spanish linguistics (SPN 412) or other linguistics course (check with instructor).
