SSC Lyris E-List ("Listserv") Request

Currently you need to contact Dr. Jon Aske of the Department of Foreign Languages in order to create a mailing list using the LYRIS list server ("listserv") at Salem State College. You can use this form here to make a list creation request. This form includes the most basic and common options about which you may have an opinion.

For further options, or if you find this form too confusing, skip to the very bottom of this webpage to send him a message in the Comments box (after you have filled out your name and address at the very top). You can also write to Dr. Aske directly at Click here to send email.

You may skip the sections labelled as OPTIONAL if you don't know or don't care (most sections are optional). Later on we can make changes as the need arises.

Requesting person

  • Your Name:
  • Your email address:
This should be the exact address that shows as the sender of your email messages. If it is not exactly the same, then the list server will not recognize you as a member.
NB: For SSC email addresses, it makes a difference whether you use the short or the long version of your name in the first half, e.g. jaske vs. jon.aske. Enter the short, because that is what appears in your return address when you use Groupwise. The long name is actually an alias for the short one.
This will be the administrator's address. If you want to use a second, "home" address, add it at the end in the comments box.
  • Department:
  • List purpose (e.g. class, club, faculty, ...):

Basic Information

  • List name: @listserv.salemstate.edu
Single word; may contain hyphens; in lower case letters; the official Mailing List Name, e.g. chemistry-club, french-faculty, bio203-05. This will be the part of the list's email address to the left of the @ sign (e.g. chemistry-club@listserv.salemstate.edu, bio203-05@listserv.salemstate.edu) [more info]:
  • List Description:
Short description of this mailing list. This will appear on the To: line; e.g. French Literature II, Biology Majors, Chemistry Faculty. [more info]:

Posting Privileges and Moderation

  • Who can send messages to this list?: Only admininstrators (i.e. YOU) [= one-way announcement list]? Or all the members of the list [= discussion list]? In most cases you want the latter. [more info]
  • Is this list moderated?: Do you (the admininstrator) want to have to approve (by email) each message sent to the list before it is posted, or do you want the messages to be distributed directly after they're received? Moderation may be advisable with larger, anonymous lists with lots of members to prevent junk mail. You probably don't want to do that for smaller, high-traffic lists, such as class lists. [more info]

Security for Subscribers [OPTIONAL]

There are two major ways in which people can be added to the list:

  1. (most common) You collect addresses (on a piece of paper in class or through email) and input them yourself at the administrator's Lyris site (or send them to us by email to do it for you).
  2. Students go to the individual list's webpage and add themselves to the list. Students may fail to do it.
  • Security: How are new members admitted to this mailing list? Private and password are probably what you want. Choose private if you are not sure and skip the next box. [more info]
  • Password: If this list is password protected for new subscribers (see above), what is the password? [more info]

Confirmations [OPTIONAL]

  • Confirm Subscribes?: Require an email confirmation message from new subscribers before signing them on. You may or may not want this. If confirm is on this prevents people from signing other people to the list without their permission, but it is an added nuisance for normal subscribers. If you are going to add the list members yourself, you may ignore this. [more info]
  • Confirm Unsubscribes?: When members unsubscribe by email, then should Lyris require a confirmation message? [more info]

Documents [OPTIONAL]

These are optional. If you want members to get a welcome, goodbye, or confirm message, write them here. If not, just leave blank.

  • Hello: Document to display to new members [more info]
  • Goodbye: Document to display to departing users [more info]
  • Confirm: Document to display to confirming users [more info]

Limits [OPTIONAL]

  • Message size limit: default is 50k: In kilobytes, the maximum size of allowed messages from non-admin members. If you would like a larger limit, write that limit in this box. [more info]

Email Headers [OPTIONAL]

  • Reply To: The default behavior for Lyris lists is for replies to messages coming from the list to go back to everybody on the list, not just the originator of the message. This is probably a good idea. The problem with this, however, is that irrelevant messages may clutter people's mailboxes (if the list is unmoderated) or that messages intended for one person may end up going to everyone, thus embarrassing the sender and inconveniencing the recipients. [more info]

Archives [OPTIONAL]

  • Save Archives: Should we keep archives of messages on this mailing list? Lyris can save all messages, which allows list members to read messages online (as opposed to in their mailboxes) or to read old messages that they had lost or discarded. You probably want to save messages, but if you don't, you may choose not to. [more info]

Error Mail Handling [OPTIONAL]

  • Bounce Limit: After how many mail bounce messages should a member be placed on hold and not be sent messages anymore? The default is 5. [more info]

Miscellaneous [OPTIONAL]

  • Subscription Reports: Send which subscription/unsubscription progress reports by email to list administrators? Type yes or no; if yes: daily/weekly/monthly/ etc. [more info]

List members [OPTIONAL]

  • If you have the (names and) email addresses of some of the list members already, and you would like them to be added to the list without them having to do anything about it, add those names in the box below in the following format (names are not required, only email addresses are):
    First1 Last1 <email1@whatever.com>
    First2 Last2 <email2@whatever.com>
    ...

Comments [OPTIONAL]
