Introduction

The term 'Applied Linguistics' refers to somewhat different things, depending on the context. It refers most generally to the different academic areas which study practical, societal issues which have to do with language. It differs from 'general', 'theoretical', or 'structural' approaches to the study of language, or languages, which is what's typically meant by the more general term 'linguistics' (see my linguistics page).

Although for some the term Applied Linguistics includes areas of study such as sociolinguistics, the study of language in culture and society, 'Applied Linguistics' is perhaps for most people primarily "the study of language learning, language teaching and language use", but also "translation, literary stylistics, language planning and the politics of language" (definition from the web page of the Department of Applied Linguistics at Edinburgh University). For some, Applied Linguistics is closely associated with the use of technology to aid second language learning, areas which go by the name of Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL), or Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL). Technology, however is a double edged sword.

Another innovative approach to language learning in the academy involves taking language learning beyond the language classroom and on to introduce it into to other learning activities. I have another page that has links to sources of information about this: my Languages Across the Curriculum page.

Other areas of the study of language which are sometimes included under the term "applied linguistics" include orthography, reading, bilingualism, dialectology, some areas of sociolinguistics, literature, language disorders, language testing, forensic linguistics, to name a few.

In this page I have gathered a number of links to resources, departments, journals, etc. which I have collected in my roamings through the World Wide Web and which have caught my attention for one reason or another. Most of them have to do with second language learning and teaching. I have made this page primarily for my own reference, but I would like to share it with you if you find it useful.
